Carbon Dioxide (CO2) has gotten a bad rap for causing pollution, the greenhouse effect AND global warming.  Deservedly so, in most cases.

Fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal have powered the world’s economic growth since the days of the industrial revolution.   As the world economies expand, so does the need for fossil fuels.  The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that global energy consumption will increase 50% by 2030 to over 112 million barrels of crude oil per day.  The economic cost is significant with the price of oil and coal setting new highs seemingly every day, but the environmental impact is staggering with BILLIONS of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually.

What if there was a way to turn that pollution into profits?

Yes!  That is what today’s alert company Carbon Sciences, Inc. (CABN) is doing!

CABN is developing a breakthrough technology to recycle CO2 emissions (from coal plants, fuel refineries, gas-fired plants, etc…) into fuels such as gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel.

The key parts of
CABN’s technology are:

  • CABN has discovered (and patented) a low energy and highly scalable process to recycle large quantities of CO2 into gaseous and liquid fuels using organic biocatalysts;
  • The key to their CO2-to-Fuel approach lies in a proprietary multi-step biocatalytic process;
  • In addition, the process operates in low temperature and low pressure compared to competing technologies, therefore lowering energy requirements.

I don’t have the space to give a full technical analysis of CABN’S patent-pending process, so here is a link to their site

Why am I so excited about CABN?

  • The technology has been touted by national publications such as USA TODAY as the furthest along in the CO2-to-fuels quest.
  • In fact, the company expects to have a full-scale production plant in service in 2010
  • The company has stated in prior press releases, “According to the International Energy Agency, the CO2 mitigation technology market is projected to reach $400 billion by 2030.

It appears that CABN is the lead horse in that VERY LUCRATIVE race! That was $400 BILLION, by the way!

Other voices chime in on CABN:

Carbon Sciences’ CEO, Derek McLeish and President, Byron Elton spoke with Newsweek’s Anita Kirpalani in the Newsweek exclusive interview.  Click here to read full article

Carbon Sciences is featured in USA Today’s print and online edition reporting that the company is the furthest along in the CO2-to-fuels quest. Click here to read full article

You might have thought that recycling is limited to paper, plastics and glass. Well, think again. A Californian company is developing a new technique for recycling carbon dioxide, or CO2, and turning it back into fuel. Click here to read full article

CABN claims it has developed a way of using the CO2 emitted during the combustion of coal, oil and other hydrocarbons to create transportation fuels like gasoline and jet fuel. Should CABN - or any of the other firms working on similar projects - accomplish this on a large scale, it could bring a reduction in CO2 emissions as well as an abundant supply of renewable fuel.  Click here to read the full article

And, here is the latest news:

Carbon Sciences Announces Major Breakthrough to Recycle CO2 Into Gasoline

CABN announced today the development of certain process technologies that will allow for the production of gasoline, shorten the time to commercialization and reduce the system and operating costs of its CO2-to-Fuel technology. The company’s current approach is an enzyme-based process used to transform CO2 into low-level fuels, such as methanol. Dr. Naveed Aslam, chief technology officer of Carbon Sciences, has now discovered a new and more cost efficient process to produce gasoline, a high-level fuel, from CO2.

Dr. Aslam was quoted as saying, “We are anticipating a shorter than normal development cycle for this module and are hoping to achieve commercialization in less than one year.”  It appears that CABN is “padding its lead”!
