PALM, BWEN, ONTY, OFLG, RRI

I did a search on MSN Money and came across a list for the biggest losers in 2010.  I picked 5 under $5 to share with you.  The question that I have for these 5 is “will they continue to be losers….or is there hope”.  Their 2010 hasn’t been very good, but history does not define the future necessarily.

The biggest loser first…down over 60% in 2010:

Is Palm, Inc. (NasdaqGS: PALM) on its death bed?  Many have called out Palm as hopelessly behind in the smartphone race and that NOTHING they do from here on out will matter.  Their is no cachet to their phones anymore and they don’t have much time to get it right.   They are bleeding money Q over Q and their balance sheet isn’t that strong.  Firing their ad agency, channel partners slashing price on Palm phones and so much bad press means negative buzz and traders are leaving like rats on a sinking ship.

The chart certainly doesn’t have much to recommend it.  It appears that the sellers are taking a rest, but remember that investors with higher stock basis will be selling into any strength.

This one is down only 44% in 2010:

Broadwind Energy, Inc. NasdaqGS:BWEN) has got a good shot at a comeback imo.  All of the attention in the natural resource market/alternative energy is on oil and gas and gold.  Obama needs to do a stump speech on Wind Energy to get people looking at this sector again.  Wind is the future and is farther along than solar as far as a viable energy alternative.   They are a vertically integrated wind energy company that will sell you the turbine and also help you create and manage your windfarm.  Balance sheet shows high debt and income statement shows continuing losses, but I think that BWEN can get through this “bad patch”.  Worth keeping on the radar.

This one is down over 36% in 2010

Oncothyreon Inc. (Nasdaq:ONTY) got hit by the dreaded “negative FDA report”.  It took a one day blood batch in March losing 25% in one day!  Since then, sanity appears to have been returned to ONTY.  That one day was not followed by more selloff.  It actually has stabilized at around $3.50.   ONTY is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focusing on the development of therapeutic products for the treatment of cancer.  It has a decent balance sheet, existing licensing/partnership arrangements with some of the largest Pharma companies in the world.  Here is a research report that I did on ONTY a few weeks back: Research Report on ONTY

IFLG is down 30% overall for 2010.

InfoLogix, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFLG) is a leading technology provider of enterprise mobility solutions for the healthcare and commercial industries.  They were a 2010 high flier (see below) and now are one of the “losers” of 2010.  If they can build a durable base at this level, I could see them taking off again.   The company themselves are at a loss to explain why the shares jumped in February.  I think that IFLG should be on your radar screen.

Down 31.8%, RRI is the last symbol of this blog.

RRI Energy, Inc. (NYSE:RRI) has seen a great deal of selling in 2010.  The volume chart below looks mainly red.  RRI has had its share of problems this year (many of their own making), but long term I think that RRI will prosper.  With a hot summer in the forecast and unfavorable hedging contract behind them, I could see RRI shares pick up nicely.  They are doing a great deal to improve results and have made projections of much improved results for 2010.
